Archaeologist Martin Day has bought a house on the island of Naxos and proposes to combine a little historical research with a quiet life. When a New York historian is killed, a woman disappears, and a body is found in a shepherd’s hut in the hills, Day becomes increasingly involved and begins to suspect a connection with a so-far undiscovered ancient site. Archaeologist Martin Day is asked to keep an eye on a shipping magnate who is suspected of antiquity fraud on a grand scale, but whose guilt cannot be proved. There is also the small question of a valuable artefact with no provenance.
